Otro Capital Closes Oversubscribed Inaugural Sports Fund With $1.2 Billion
Otro Capital announced the close of its inaugural sports fund, Otro Capital Fund I, with $1.2 billion in committed capital to Fund I and its affiliated investment vehicles. The fundraise substantially exceeded the Fund I’s initial target. Their experience spans major global professional sports leagues such as the NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL, Formula 1, English Premier League and the Indian Premier League.

‘Pain’ and ‘paralyzing’: Tariffs sent sports licensees scrambling for solutions
The Sports Licensing & Tailgate Show is an annual gathering of sports-licensed products makers, buyers and sellers in Las Vegas. After one year of the trade war launched by the Trump administration, tariffs were the topic of discussion at the show. The industry is dependent on Asian manufacturing. They had an additional 10% (or more) added to their cost of goods from China, on top of some existing tariffs.

Private Equity Has Reached the Super Bowl
The NFL was the last major North American pro sports league to crack its doors open to private-equity investment. The Patriots sold a 3% stake to private-equity firm Sixth Street in September at a valuation north of $9 billion. New England was the fourth, and most recent, team to take on a private-equity investor since the league formally approved a new policy allowing minority stakes in August 2024.

Savannah Guthrie set to pull out of hosting Winter Olympics opening ceremony as mom Nancy remains missing
Savannah Guthrie dropped out of hosting the 2026 Winter Olympics opening ceremony for NBC. Her mom, Nancy Guthrie, was reported missing in Tucson, Arizona. Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos said her disappearance is being treated as a crime. This would have marked Savannah’s fourth time hosting an Olympic opening ceremony.

The LA28 Olympic and Paralympic Games announced six additional venues across the United States that will hold matches for the 2028 Olympic Football (Soccer) Tournaments. The final stage matches will be at Rose Bowl Stadium. Other venues are in the metropolitan areas of New York, New York; Columbus, Ohio; Nashville, Tennessee; St. Louis, Missouri; San José, California; and San Diego, California.

BetMGM is a leading sports betting and iGaming operator. They are updating their terms of service to explicitly prohibit athlete harassment. Disney names parks boss Josh D’Amaro as new CEO to replace Bob Iger
The Walt Disney Company named Josh D’Amaro the chief executive. He will succeed Bob Iger. D’Amaro will start his role next month. He is the second parks chief to ascend to the top job after Bob Chapek, whose brief tenure as CEO interrupted Iger’s two stretches at the helm. D’Amaro has overseen Disney Experiences since 2020.

Roger Goodell says NFL willing to assist college football amid 'disruption,' NCAA governance issues
College football faces numerous issues in the no-holds-barred era of the transfer portal, revenue sharing and NIL. The NFL is willing to assist in creating a straight path, according to the league commissioner, Roger Goodell. Goodell said the olive branch would need to be extended from college football’s side before the NFL could potentially be of service.
