NASCAR Remains at 'Standstill' on Financial Future Amid Charter Disagreement
For more than two years, NASCAR and its racing teams have “essentially been at a standstill about the financial future of the sport," according to Ken Belson of the N.Y. TIMES via SBJ. In sporadic talks between the sides, NASCAR has offered a “modestly larger share of its new broadcast contract to the teams.” But it has “balked at the teams’ request that it share revenue from any future money streams like gambling,” and it has “refused their calls to make permanent the charters that teams must own to operate their cars."

Peloton Timeline: CEO Changes, Layoffs, Recalls, and Falling Stocks
FOS’ David Rumsey writes, “Peloton, the once-booming leader in the at-home fitness space, announced Thursday that CEO Barry McCarthy is stepping down and about 400 jobs, or 15% of its workforce, would be cut. Ryan Reynolds’ Firm Invests in Vintage Apparel Maker Homage
As Sportico’s Jason Clinkscales writes, “Ryan Reynolds’ latest investment in the sports world is a throwback of sorts. Homage, the sports and licensed apparel company based in Columbus, Ohio, has received a strategic investment of capital from Reynolds’ company, Maximum Effort Investments. Homage specializes in vintage-styled sports apparel, with licenses from several major sports organizations including the NBA, NFL, the WNBA, Major League Baseball and WWE.”

Sources: Ernie Johnson Will Stay at Turner, Even if NBA Doesn't
While Charles Barkley is a certain broadcast free agent if Warner Bros. Discovery loses its NBA package following the 2024-25 season (more on that below), industry sources said Thursday that co-host Ernie Johnson would remain at Turner either way -- meaning next season could be the last for TNT’s award-winning studio show "Inside the NBA."

Jeff Pash Will Retire from League Office
NBC Sports’ Mike Florio writes, “NFL general counsel Jeff Pash is stepping down. Per a source with knowledge of the situation, Commissioner Roger Goodell has informed all teams that Pash has ‘decided to begin planning for his retirement. Pash joined the league office in 1997. When Goodell became Commissioner in 2006, he retained Pash in that role. He has been heavily involved in the efforts of the league to make the game safer.”

Clemson Wants ACC to Pay for ‘Malicious Conduct’ and Slander in Lawsuit
Clemson has turned up the heat on its lawsuit against the Atlantic Coast Conference — litigation that also affects Florida State’s future in the ACC. The Tigers are now seeking “punitive damages to Clemson for the ACC’s willful and malicious conduct,” including “slander of title.”

Georgia Gives Kirby Smart a Raise to Make Him the Highest-Paid Coach in College Football
Yahoo! Sports’ Nick Bromberg reports, “Smart officially received a two-year contract extension from Georgia on Thursday. His contract with the Bulldogs now runs through the 2033 season and he’s set to make $13 million in 2024.
“The pay bump pushes him ahead of Clemson’s Dabo Swinney as the highest-paid coach at a public university, according to USA Today’s database. Swinney is set to make $11 million in 2024.”

NCAA Could Pay More Than $2.7B to Settle NIL Suits, Sources Say
ESPN’s Pete Thamel and Dan Murphy report: “The NCAA's national office might be footing the bill for a settlement expected to be more than $2.7 billion in the landmark House v. NCAA antitrust lawsuit in hopes of reshaping and stabilizing the college sports industry, according to multiple sources.
“Sources told ESPN this week that parties have proposed the NCAA's national office -- rather than its individual member schools or conferences -- would pay for the settlement of past damages over a period of 10 years.”

NCAA has Bids for Regionals and the Frozen Four Through 2028 and More Notes from Naples
College Hockey Insider’s Mike McMahon writes, “As I covered in my primer earlier this week (link below if you haven’t read it), there have been conversations about the future of the NCAA Tournament this week in Naples, including whether the format should revert to on-campus sites for regionals rather than neutral sites. However, don’t expect changes anytime soon.”
Regional bids through 2028 and Frozen Four bids for the 2027 and 2028 championships have been submitted, and we could hear about future locations as early as this fall.
