$20 Million Per Year Becoming New Baseline for NBA Role Players
The paychecks are increasing each year in the NBA. This year, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander signed a four-year, $285 million extension. He became the first player in NBA history with a contract average annual value north of $70 million. Six role players signed rookie extensions and five of them received a deal north of $20 million per year. The players get 51% of the league’s basketball-related income (BRI). Last year’s BRI was $10.247 billion.

BrewDog lands naming rights to St Helens stadium
BrewDog acquired naming rights to St Helens’ home stadium as part of a wide-ranging agreement with the Super League club. The agreement will run for 10 years. The stadium is now called The Brewdog Stadium. This is one of the biggest commercial agreements in the club’s history.

NHL announces landmark multiyear partnerships with Kalshi, Polymarket
The NHL had a multiyear agreement with Polymarket and Kalshi. The companies are the official prediction market partners of the league. Polymarket and Kalshi will have access to official NHL proprietary data and rights to use NHL marks, logos and official designations on their platforms and products. Both companies will also receive brand exposure via Digitally Enhanced Dasherboards (DED) and blue line slot virtual signage on NHL game broadcasts, including regular season national games, Stanley Cup Playoffs games and NHL Winter Classic and NHL Stadium Series national broadcasts.

NFL owners approve Disney/ESPN media deal
The NFL announced that owners voted to approve the massive media deal with Disney. The deal will give ESPN control of assets like NFL Network. This will give the NFL a 10% equity stake in ESPN. The transaction remains subject to governmental review and approval.

The NBA broadcast returned to NBC for the first time in 23 years. The last time the network carried basketball broadcast was when Michael Jordan carried the league. The fans say that NBC nailed it after the first of the night’s two games. Fans loved the nostalgia of the 90s, energy of the pregame show, chemistry between the commentators and the player intros.

La Liga cancels Villarreal v Barcelona in Miami
La Liga cancelled its plans to hold a regular-season match between Villarreal and Barcelona in Miami in December. The plans to hold a top-flight game outside of Spain or the first time faced a huge backlash. Players were refusing to move for the first 15 seconds of matches in La Liga at the weekend. The match will now be held at Villarreal's Estadio de la Ceramica home as originally scheduled.

Former Warriors GM Bob Myers Leaves ESPN For New Career Path
Golden State Warriors general manager Bob Myers stepped down from his role in 2023. Since then, he’s worked with ESPN as an analyst. Recently, he’s pivoting back to the front office. Myers left his role with ESPN to become the President of Sports for Harris Blitzer Sports and Entertainment. Myers will oversee a portfolio of sports franchises that include the New Jersey Devils (NHL), Philadelphia 76ers (NBA), Crystal Palace (EPL), and Joe Gibbs Racing (NASCAR).

NFL star Travis Kelce is teaming up with activist investor Jana Partners in a bid to help reshape the future of Six Flags Entertainment. Corp. Glenn Murphy and Dave Habiger are also in on the investment. The group now holds an economic interest of roughly 9% in the amusement park operator.

Big 12's Yormark supports expanding NCAA Tournament, CFP
Big 12 commissioner Brett Yormark is in favor of expanding the NCAA Tournament and the College Football Playoff. He remains cautious about exactly how it will work. NCAA president Charlie Baker said he supports the expansion of March Madness. It has included 68 teams since 2011. The rumor is to have it increase to 72 or 76 teams with more “play-in” games as soon as the 2027 tournament.
