NFL declines Brendan Sorsby supplemental draft: What to know
Following a gambling scandal that led to his permanent NCAA ineligibility, quarterback Brendan Sorsby petitioned for the 2026 NFL supplemental draft after dropping his lawsuit against the NCAA. However, the NFL declined to hold the supplemental draft, citing a lack of supporting documentation in Sorsby's petition and insufficient time to thoroughly review his case before the July deadline. As a result, Sorsby is left without any college or professional football options for the upcoming season and will have to wait until the 2027 NFL draft to pursue his pro career.

This new "five-for-five" model effectively eliminates traditional redshirt seasons and hardship waivers, a major shift designed to streamline the process and prevent players from using legal loopholes to extend their careers for six or seven years. While currently enrolled student-athletes will have flexibility in choosing the most beneficial system, the rule will apply strictly to all future prospects, reshaping how programs handle player development and cutting off international professional eligibility loopholes.
