NFL Signals Openness to Prediction Markets
The NFL has a building interest in prediction markets. The league isn’t ready to dive in headfirst. NFL EVP Jeff Miller said the league is paying close attention to prediction markets, even as major regulatory questions remain unresolved. The NFL has major sports betting partners, including DraftKings and FanDuel. The NBA and MLB have also not yet embraced prediction markets, but the NHL, MLS and UFC have.

San Diego Padres attract ‘interest’ from Dan Friedkin and Jose Feliciano
Dan Friedkin and Jose Feliciano are interested in buying the San Diego Padres. Friedkin owns Premier League club Everton and Serie A outfit AS Roma. He was previously a finalist in bidding for the Boston Celtics and has been linked with owning the NHL expansion team in Houston. Feliciano is the co-founder of Clearlake Capital, the firm that co-owns Chelsea.

FIFA World Cup Boston in jeopardy? Foxborough officials demand $7.7M for security
Foxborough officials said they are willing to try to standing the way of Gillette Stadium hosting the 2026 World Cup soccer games this summer if security funding issues aren’t resolved in the next few weeks. Town officials will not grant the entertainment license necessary for the matches to be played in Foxborough until the parties involved figure out who will pay the event’s estimated $7.7 million in security costs up front.

Audience for ESPN studio shows jumps 13% in January
ESPN’s second-best monthly audience on record was in January. It was fueled by live games and studio shows. The audience was up 13% across the board. The Pat McAfee Show and Get Up had their best months ever. SportsCenter viewership went up 11%.

The San Jose Sharks have launched a digital experience to showcase planned upgrades at SAP Center. A dedicated website has been launched for The Teal Reimagination, which offers a first public window into the planned multi-year transformation of SAP Center. The website lets fans take a look at how the new-look arena will enhance the fan experience.

Tate McRae addresses fan backlash after appearing in ad promoting Team USA
Tate McRae was born in Calgary. Recently, she was in an ad highlighting Team USA for the Milan Cortina Winter Games. Canadians were quick to share their disappointment with McRae on social media. They were mad that she was supporting American athletes instead of ones from her own country. McRae responded to the backlash by posting a photo of her as a kid holding a miniature Canadian flag.

Washington Post lays off one-third of its newsroom
The Washington Post announced sweeping layoffs. The wide-ranging job losses primarily affected the sports, books and podcast units. Foreign desks were also heavily impacted, along with cuts to business and national teams. Roughly one-third of the company was affected by the layoffs. The Post has been owned by Amazon since 2013. This hasn’t spared the paper from layoffs.

Michigan and Michigan State played one of their first regular-season rivalry matchups. The teams are also battling for the Big Ten title and status as two of the top 10 teams in the nation. Michigan coach Dusty May argued that the tension went too fast in the No. 3 Wolverines’ 83-71 win over the No. 7 Spartans last Friday night. Michigan State said there were very dangerous plays.
