Excel Sports Valued at Nearly $1B in Sale to Goldman Sachs
Goldman Sachs has agreed to buy a majority stake in Excel Sports in a deal valuing the business at close to $1 billion. Excel Sports is a talent agency that represents Caitlin Clark, Derek Jeter and Tiger Woods. In Excel, Goldman picks up a New York–based company with a roster of roughly 750 clients. The company helps athletes negotiate contracts, secure sponsorship deals, develop social media strategies and other services.

LRMR Ventures (LeBron James and Maverick Carter), SC Holdings, 35 V (Kevin Durant and Rich Kleiman) and Paolo Banchero have invested in MADE Hoops. MADE Hoops outlined two major initiatives funded by the investment. First, they will operate as a non-profit foundation providing scholarships, training resources, and community programs for youth players and facilities nationwide. Second, they will build a state-of-the-art player development center in New York City to open in 2026.

The Snow League Raises $15 Million to Accelerate Global Expansion
The first professional winter sports league entirely dedicated to snowboarding and freeskiing is The Snow League. They announced their $15 million funding will accelerate its growth and expansion for the inaugural 2025-26 season. The league will have events in Asia, North America and Europe. The funding round was anchored by new investors 359 Capital, BITKRAFT Ventures, WISE Ventures and Left Lane Capital.

Versant Designates USA Sports As Brand For Sports Programming On Golf Channel And USA Network
Versant, the new home for NBCUniversal cable networks being spun off from Comcast, will use USA Sports. USA Sports will be the umbrella brand and division name for sports programming on USA Network and Golf Channel. The company will have rights to golf, stock car racing, Premier League soccer, the WWE, WNBA, college basketball and other sports.

Atlanta lands NWSL franchise, Mercedes-Benz Stadium to host
Atlanta is the latest expansion franchise in the National Women’s Soccer League. The team will play its home matches in Mercedes-Benz Stadium with an expected capacity of 28,000. The new club will begin play in 2028. The Arthur M. Blank Family Foundation will provide seed funding to launch the NWSL Foundation, which will focus on advancing research and innovation in women’s sports, with an emphasis on female athlete health and performance.

Mavericks fire Nico Harrison: General manager ousted less than a year after Luka Dončić trade
The Dallas Mavericks fired general manager Nico Harrison. It is less than a year after Harrison’s controversial decision to trade Luka Dončić to the Los Angeles Lakers. The Mavericks have been on a downfall since then, despite being the 2024 Western Conference champions. Assistant general managers Michael Finley and Matt Riccardi have been named co-interim general managers.

The New York Yankees fired the team’s long-term international scouting director, Donny Rowland. The team failed to successfully convert their big-money overseas signings into MLB starts in recent years. Rowland spent 15 years in the role and was with the Yankees for 23 years. This year marks New York’s 16th consecutive season without a championship.

Sun Belt suspends 13 players, including 1 for rest of season, because of postgame brawl between Texas State, Louisiana
The Sun Belt Conference handed out 13 suspensions, including one for the rest of the season, after Louisiana and Texas State football players had a postgame brawl. Louisiana safety Tyree Skipper is suspended for the rest of the 2025 season, including a potential bowl game. He was swinging his helmet at Texas State players. Other players are suspended for either one or two games.
