Valkyries Make WNBA History With Championship in Second Season
The Golden State Valkyries made WNBA history by defeating the Atlanta Dream in Game 7 of the Finals to capture the championship in just their second season as an expansion franchise. Under head coach Natalie Nakase, the team achieved the fastest title run for any expansion team across major sports while capping off a record-breaking year that included leading the league in attendance and reaching $100 million in annual revenue. This historic milestone also coincided with the tumultuous culmination of the WNBA Finals and the final months of league commissioner Cathy Engelbert’s tenure.

Appellate court revives 'Sunday Ticket' antitrust verdict against NFL
A federal appeals court has revived a massive $4.7 billion antitrust verdict against the NFL regarding its "Sunday Ticket" subscription package, overturning a lower judge's decision that had discarded the jury's finding. The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that the trial judge improperly excluded expert testimony and sent the case back to the district court to reinstate the verdict while holding a new trial strictly on damages. The class-action lawsuit, originally filed in 2015, claimed that the league broke antitrust laws by restricting out-of-market games to DirecTV and inflating package prices for millions of residential subscribers and businesses.

Russia allowed to return to international hockey after CAS ruling
The Court of Arbitration for Sport has ordered the International Ice Hockey Federation to permit Russian teams to return to international competitions for the 2026-27 season. The ruling concluded that the IIHF's prior bans based on safety and security concerns lacked sufficient supporting evidence, clearing the way for Russian athletes to compete in upcoming tournaments without mandatory neutrality requirements. While Russian sports officials welcomed the decision, the IIHF and several national federations expressed disappointment and maintained that the return threatens competition integrity and safety.
